About Executive Coaching

Our approach executive coaching is different

Our approach may not be what you have experienced before or heard about executive or business coaching. First, we aren’t “life coaches”. Yes, maintaining balance in life is critically important to leadership performance, and problems in the other areas of life can definitely affect your management performance. If we need to touch on those areas we will, but we want to focus on keeping you effective as an executive. If we can do that, morale about your life in general will improve, which impacts the other dynamics of your life outside of your work in leadership.

Solutions through leadership coaching

Our formula for executive coaching is rather simple, but produces profound results.

We begin by gathering an inventory of your concerns, i.e. those situations or problems that you can see and wish to confront, but haven’t yet done so. We then inventory what might be missing that prevents you from acting, from being decisive in those situations. Often those “missings” come in the form of your perceptions, skills, confidence, experience. So, we agree on a course of action to begin filling in what’s missing and then hold you to your commitments to begin moving forward.

Along the path, we will periodically inventory what you have learned, acknowledging your competence and providing you with greater certainty on your own skills and abilities. When needed, we provide you with theory and training on missing skills through discussion or readings that are topical to what you are trying to handle.

Barriers to effective leadership

What are the barriers to effective leadership we encounter most often in coaching?

  • Overwhelm: Simply too much, too often, with no escape in sight. Executives cope by literally failing to see the problem. In countless organizational assessments, we have learned that overwhelmed executives have significant blind spots. They literally can’t or won’t see what others are seeing in the organization. So, support for leadership ebbs away and, thus, the problem(s) worsens.
  • Failure to Act: Executives fail to act either because similar problems have not been successfully resolved in the past or the costs of a wrong decision are too high. When this happens, executives will stall taking action. Leadership teams and staff far more often forgive a wrong decision, than they do a failure to act altogether.
  • Failure to Communicate: When suffering from not feeling good about their performance, executives sequester themselves in the office and don’t communicate with others. Again, this failure is deadly to a leader.

In executive or business coaching, we examine the barriers in your unique situation and what is missing that creates the barrier. Then we attack that list of missing skills and knowledge together head on until the barriers quietly slip away.

The mechanics of an effective coaching relationship

After we complete the initial inventory and sort the logistics on how we will conduct our meetings, regular coaching sessions are usually 1/2 hour in length. The duration of the relationship in coaching varies widely and is determined by you. Some of our engagements have lasted only one month in situations where an executive simply needed to get over a hurdle, after which they were back on step. However, some relationships have lasted for well over a year when the “coachee” is transitioning into a new position of leadership.

Because the coaching relationship is so highly personal, it is important that coach and coachee get to know one another through dialogue before any commitment is made to a coaching relationship. An effective executive coaching relationship is built on honesty and a commitment by both parties to communicate perceptions about situations and each other’s performance. You need to succeed, and we will only partner with you if both of us agree that our coaching relationship and process are the right tools for that success.
